DONAGARA – PORT DENISON

Being right on the Indian Ocean, the twin town is a great spot for everything water and wind based, from swimming to surfing, kite surfing, canoeing, sailing, and fishing. Land based activities include awesome walking trails steeped in local history and out-of-this-world facilities for scooters, push bikes and skateboards too. Both on-land tours and ocean charters are available from our twin towns too. Don’t forget to bring boards, kites, bocci, beach volleyball or cricket kits!

ANZAC Memorial & Lookout on Ocean Drive – marvel at the artistic display of our local heroes

Autumn Centre – Local social hub with something for everyone including bingo, bowls, cards and games.  Ask the office for current days and times. 11 Morton Terrace

Beaches South Beach, Nunn’s Pool / North Beach (Seaspray) are for thrill seekers and beach combers, Foreshore Beach for the little ones, Grannies Beach for anyone who loves to swim in the surf.

Canoeing & Paddling – The twin towns offer a purpose-built canoe launch ramp off Retreat Boulevard into the Irwin River. Explore the town from a totally different perspective.

Dongara Golf Course – The Dongara Golf Course offers an 18-hole course with spectacular views of the town and the Indian Ocean. Fees apply, golf gear and buggies for hire. For buggy hire contact the Backpackers (99 271 332). Bookings recommended on 0427 099 600 or 9927 2727 / 8 Golf Course Road

Dongara Heritage Walk – 4 km walk featuring most of Dongara’s historic buildings and landmarks. Ask reception for a flyer or the 34-page Heritage Walk Book with some pretty amazing stories.

Dongara Markets – 1st Saturday of very month at Town Park / Hosken Street, 0405 309 920

Irwin District Museum & Police Station – Guided tours through the old police station.  Open Monday to Saturday 10am – 12pm. Gold coin donation. 5 Waldeck Street

Irwin Recreation Centre – MBX Pump Track (free), Skate Park (free), Roller Disco, Badminton, Gym. 1 Ridley Street / 08 9955 9200

Russ Cottage – Built in 1881, the cottage is a great place to look around. See the markings on the cottage doors for the height of previous river floods. Open most mornings from 10am – 12pm. Corner of Pt Leander Dve and St Dominicans Rd

Thungarra Trails – Range of exciting yet easy walking trails to follow including Irwin River and estuary, cemetery, obelisk, jetty ruins, shipwrecks, Anzac soldiers and the boardwalk.  Ask reception for trail maps.

 

ORGANISED TOURS

Illegal Tender Rum Co Distillery & The Common Place – head out for a tour and tasting of their locally produced Illegal Tender Rum, their Stableviews Gin and grab a bite to eat at The Common Place. Check their website or give them a call for their latest tour and opening times as things can change depending on the weather. They’ll even let you tie your dog up outside under a shady tree.
